Best Pond Liner for Fish Ponds, Koi Ponds, and Natural Swim Ponds in Australia

Not all ponds are the same, and not all pond liners suit every type of pond. A small ornamental pond with a few goldfish has very different requirements from a 4 m deep koi pond or a 15 m natural swim pond. Choose the wrong liner spec for the application and you'll either over-pay or under-spec for the build.

This guide walks through the right liner for three of the most common specialty pond types in Australia: fish ponds, koi ponds, and natural swim ponds.

Quick Summary

Note: this table reflects the current product range. PondGard™ is supplied in 1.14mm only, with the previous 1.02mm grade discontinued. Both PondEasy™ and PondGard are rated for use under rockwork.

Pond type Recommended liner Why
Small fish pond (under 5,000 L) PondEasy 0.80mm Cost-effective, 10-year warranty, rated for rockwork on smaller residential builds
Medium fish pond (5,000 to 15,000 L) PondGard 1.14mm 25-year warranty, mainstream professional spec
Koi pond, residential PondGard 1.14mm Deeper, longer-lived, 25-year warranty

Fish Ponds: General Purpose

Fish ponds cover the broadest range. Anything from a small goldfish pond in a Sydney inner-city courtyard to a substantial ecosystem pond on a Sunshine Coast acreage. The liner specification scales with the pond, but a few principles apply across the range.

Critical specs for any fish pond:

  • Pond-grade EPDM. Never use roofing-grade EPDM, construction PVC, or any membrane not specifically rated for aquatic use.
  • Minimum 600mm depth. Fish need a thermal refuge below the temperature-active surface layer. 900mm is better in warmer regions.
  • Underlay used throughout. Long-term protection from below.
  • Shielded edges. UV protection on all perimeter strips.

Liner recommendation by pond size:

  • Under 5,000 L: PondEasy 0.80mm (10-year warranty, rated for rockwork on smaller builds)
  • 5,000 to 15,000 L: PondGard 1.14mm (25-year warranty, mainstream professional spec)
  • Over 15,000 L: PondGard 1.14mm

Koi Ponds: Specialty Spec

Koi ponds are different from general fish ponds. They're built around the fish, with deeper water columns, dedicated filtration, and a much longer expected service life. A serious koi keeper expects their pond to last 30+ years and the liner needs to match that timeline.

Critical specs for koi ponds:

  • Minimum 1.2 m depth. Koi need deep water for thermal stability, oxygen retention, and overwintering. 1.5 m to 1.8 m is preferred for show fish.
  • PondGard 1.14mm. The professional spec for residential and show-grade koi ponds. The 25-year warranty matches the kind of long-term build koi keepers invest in. The 1.14mm thickness gives maximum load tolerance for the bottom drains, dedicated returns, and clean-out equipment that show koi setups use.
  • Smooth contours and minimal sharp angles. Easier to clean, less stress on the liner over time.
  • Bottom drain compatibility. EPDM liners interface cleanly with standard bottom drain fittings using appropriate flanges and seals.

Koi pond build considerations:

Koi pond builds often involve dedicated filtration that draws from the bottom of the pond. The liner has to handle these penetration points reliably for decades. EPDM does this well, but the penetration installation has to be done correctly. Most serious koi pond builds use a Certified Aquascape Contractor or specialist koi pond builder for this reason.

Koi pond water chemistry and the liner:

EPDM is chemically inert to typical koi pond conditions, including the pH ranges, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels normal during pond cycling. Salt treatments at standard hobbyist concentrations (up to 0.3%) have no effect. Stronger treatments should follow product label guidance.

Natural Swim Ponds: The Premium Build

Natural swim ponds are a growing category in Australia. They use a planted regeneration zone and biological filtration instead of chlorine, providing a swimmable water feature integrated into the landscape. They're also among the most demanding pond builds for liner specification.

Critical specs for swim ponds:

  • PondGard 1.14mm. The only liner spec we'd recommend for a swim pond. Foot traffic, scale, build value, and the 25-year warranty all justify the heaviest-duty grade.
  • 500gsm Rock Pad above and below the liner in foot-traffic zones. Critical protection where bare feet contact the liner.
  • Gradual entry beach or steps. Sharp transitions stress the liner unnecessarily.
  • Minimum 1.5 m deep zone. Provides safe swim depth and thermal stability.
  • Planted regeneration zone separated by underwater wall. The standard swim pond design pattern.

Swim pond build considerations:

Swim ponds are usually too large for a single Elevate™ roll, so on-site joining is part of the build. Use the QuickPrime Plus and QuickSeam Splice Tape system, plan join locations on horizontal surfaces away from foot-traffic zones where possible, and document the joins for future reference. PondGard 1.14mm is available in roll widths up to 15 m, which often covers a swim pond in one or two sheets.

Swim ponds are also high-value, complex builds. Most are built by Certified Aquascape Contractors rather than DIY. We can connect you with the closest CAC experienced in swim pond construction.

Pond-Grade vs Non-Pond-Grade Liner: Critical for Fish Safety

Across all three pond types, the most critical liner-related fish safety issue is using a non-pond-grade material. Common mistakes to avoid:

  • Roofing-grade EPDM, which contains additives toxic to fish
  • Builder's plastic or construction PVC
  • Plasticised tarpaulins
  • Boat covers or pool covers
  • Used or salvaged industrial membrane

All Elevate pond liner products are explicitly pond-grade and safe for fish, including koi at all sizes. Buying from a pond specialist guarantees you're getting the right material. Buying from a general hardware reseller, you need to check the product is pond-rated, not roofing or construction.

Sizing Liner for Specialty Ponds

The standard sizing formula applies. Pond length plus 2x depth plus 2x overlap, same for width. For specialty ponds with unusual features, plus a few additional considerations:

  • Bottom drain access cuts. Add additional liner for any penetrations and use specialist flange fittings.
  • Swim pond perimeter shelves. Account for the planted regeneration zone in your overall liner area calculation.
  • Filter chambers. Often share liner with the main pond via a connecting trench. Plan accordingly.

Cost Considerations by Pond Type

Liner cost is a small fraction of total build cost on specialty ponds. A 4 m x 3 m residential koi pond at PondGard 1.14mm needs roughly 5.4 m x 4.4 m of liner, costing in the order of $500 to $600 cut to size. Against a total koi pond build cost of $15,000 to $40,000 including excavation, filtration, plumbing, and finishing, the liner is 1 to 3% of the project.

For natural swim ponds, the liner can be a higher proportion of total cost simply because of scale, but it's still rarely more than 5 to 10% of the project.

In other words, specialty pond builds are exactly the wrong place to economise on liner spec. The cost difference between grades is a small percentage of the total, the performance and warranty difference can be the difference between a build that lasts 25+ years under warranty and one that needs reworking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best pond liner for a koi pond?

PondGard 1.14mm EPDM for residential and show-grade koi ponds. It carries a 25-year warranty and handles the depth, filtration penetrations, and long expected service life koi keepers invest in.

Is EPDM pond liner safe for koi?

Yes, when sold as pond-grade EPDM. Both PondEasy and PondGard are pond-grade and safe for koi at all sizes. Never use roofing-grade EPDM.

What pond liner should I use for a natural swim pond?

PondGard 1.14mm EPDM with 500gsm Rock Pad underlay in foot-traffic zones. The 25-year warranty and heavier-duty spec match the scale and value of a swim pond build.

How deep should a koi pond be?

Minimum 1.2 m. Most serious koi keepers build to 1.5 m to 1.8 m for show fish, providing thermal stability, oxygen retention, and overwintering security.

Can I use the same liner for a swim pond as for an ornamental pond?

Same liner material (EPDM) but a heavier-duty grade for swim ponds. Swim ponds require PondGard 1.14mm because of foot traffic and scale. Small ornamental ponds can use PondEasy 0.80mm, which is rated for rockwork on smaller residential builds.

Does liner thickness affect water quality in fish ponds?

No. Liner thickness has no chemical effect on water quality. Both PondEasy and PondGard are inert, pond-grade EPDM. Water quality is determined by filtration, biology, and maintenance, not the liner.

Is there a special pond liner for large dams or commercial ponds?

For large dams and commercial ponds, PondGard 1.14mm with appropriate full-roll widths (9 m, 12 m, or 15 m) and on-site joining is the standard. For genuine geomembrane applications beyond the pond range, specialty Elevate products are available.
